An annual Australian movement celebrating the moments when work feels meaningful, supportive, and inspiring.

Tell us your story and help shape the future of work in Australia.

For Mental Health Month this October, What Unites has launched the 'Best Day @ Work' campaign; a yearly movement dedicated to celebrating the moments when work feels empowering and positive.

We want to turn better days at work into best days at work, and are asking you to submit a story to help shape the future of inclusive work. This could be a video, a recording, or a short message, and you can remain anonymous if you'd like!

Together, every story brings us closer to making best days at work an everyday reality for everyone, everywhere.

When people feel safe, they feel respected and that respect gets passed on to the next person. I was having a day where my invisible diseases were creating very high pain. Because my clientele & everyone in my employ
are all aware of what i do, no one panicked, everyone was simply supportive and adjusted to what I needed.

The story behind Best Day @ Work

We spend most of our waking hours at work. It’s where we bring our talents, perspectives, and energy. Work helps shape our identity, our wellbeing, and the meaning we give to life. That’s why the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals recognise access to meaningful work that doesn’t cost our wellbeing as a basic human right. And yet, most workplaces measure only what’s broken – sick days, stress leave, turnover. Rarely do we pause to ask: What makes a best day at work?

Flipping the question

Founded by Kim Hutchinson from What Unites, Best Day @ Work began with a simple idea: instead of focusing on what we don’t want, let’s look at what we want more of.

Not just better days. Best days.

The word choice matters. It’s an invitation to dream bigger. To move beyond slightly “less stressful” or “less toxic” and imagine workplaces that are genuinely meaningful, supportive, and inspiring.

For us,
by us

For us, by us

Every October, during Mental Health Month, Best Day @ Work is a grassroots movement where diverse voices share their stories of what makes work meaningful.

Neurodivergent perspectives. Lived experience of disability, mental health challenges, and chronic illness. LGBTQIA+ voices. First Nations peoples. Diverse cultural identities. Across generations. The quieter voices that rarely get the mic.

All these stories coming together to paint a richer picture of work. Reminding us that belonging isn’t abstract. It's a series of decisions, made moment by moment.

Many campaigns are fuelled by frustration or anger. This one is fuelled by love.

It’s not flashy or loud. But it’s deeply impactful in its own quiet way. Because when someone has their best day at work, everyone benefits – the person, their team, the organisation, and the communities they serve.

This is Australia’s movement for meaningful work.

This is Australia’s movement for meaningful work.

We’re holding space for both macro vision and micro action.

Dream big about an inclusive future of work where wellbeing is part of the foundation. And because if we don’t talk about it and build a shared vision, then we can’t get there.

Start small with one glimmer, one connection, one moment of joy. The law of marginal gains shows that small 1% improvements accumulate into significant change. A collection of small joys can reshape entire workplaces.

Together, every story brings us closer to making best days at work an everyday reality for everyone, everywhere..

“We are creatures of context. For many of us, the workplace is one of the most dominant contexts in our life, so

our experiences at work are significant in shaping who we are, how we relate, and how we contribute to creating the kind of world we want to live in together.

Collectives of people who nurture their workplace to be a nourishing, inclusive community of shared purpose, mutual appreciation and belonging are influencing vital changes which ripple warmly through families, communities and our broader society. The Best Day @ is a beautiful opportunity to come together, connect more deeply through our stories, reflect on what really matters, and step forward together with fresh perspectives and meaningful intentions – not just for how we work together, but for how we live together as a community.”
